Carl Groover Hayes, the son of the late Catherine and Carl Louis Hayes, was born in East Point, GA in 1932. In 1950 he graduated from College Park High School. He valued education as a privilege and a lifelong journey. This led him to earn a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina in 1967. He later worked as an Epidemiologist for the EPA where he was regarded as one of the top Epidemiologists in the country. In 2007 he retired from the EPA in the Research Triangle Park. The mountains drew him to move to Tennessee after retirement. Living in Tennessee until failing health earlier this year, he moved to South Carolina to be closer to his sister and her sons.

Carl Groover Hayes is lovingly remembered by his children, Carl Richard Hayes of Raleigh, NC and Allen Craig Hayes and his wife, Lynette, and grandson Christopher Hayes, all of Clearwater, FL; his sister, Doris McDonald of Simpsonville, SC; and his nephews, Charles McDonald, Mark McDonald, and David McDonald.
