From John's wife:

John was a very caring, giving person. John was a true gentleman from the old school. He loved the world of Aviation since he was about 12 years old. When he turned 15 he started pilot training. He obtained his private pilot license at age 16, obtained other licenses and began instructing at age 18. John went on to complete all the licenses obtainable, and some outside the realm of professional piloting. John worked for Delta Air Lines as a young man, built his flight hours on his lunch time, which he paid for with what he earned while working at his local Big Star. Everything he earned went into his flying. John flew for several non-sched air lines before landing his dream job of flying for Delta Air Lines, February 17, 1964. John flew for Delta for thirty-one years before retiring in July, 1994. When John retired he was Captain on the B-767 ER, extended Range, flying overseas. He was a very safety conscience person, especially when it came to air safety. He was a member of several organizations pertaining to flying and was a Aviation Consultant and Expert Witness in Aviation for attorneys all over the East Coast. He was probably one of the most admired Instructors due to his dedication to the field. John taught me, his wife Zona, to fly and we shared many good times in the air. John had a couple of flight schools in the Atlanta area. He wanted others to have the opportunity to obtain their pilot license at a truly affordable rate. Many of John's students went on to fly for a major air line. John was the best in whatever he decided to do. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather in addition to being a good friend. I admire John because he knew what he wanted to do in life, set his goals and achieved them. That is a rarity today....He is sorely missed by many.

Remember John from CPHS we were in the same class sorry to hear of his passing. We were in some of same classes together.  One thing for sure, he earned his wings and helped many earned theirs.  Ward Lawton (54)

I, for one, shall forever be indebted to John for an invitation/suggestion he made to me in the 11th or 12th grade, I forget which.  I followed through on his thoughts, and it changed my entire life in extremely positive ways.  Following graduation, I only saw John at class reunions.  It is pleasing to me to learn that John made innumerable contributions to bettering our society and to his family throughout his life..
