Obituary for Norma Fields McLendon

March 31, 1932 - March 19, 2014

Mrs. Norma Elaine Fields McLendon, 81, of College Park, Ga., passed away March 19 after several years of declining health.

Norma was retired from a 25-year career with the Atlanta Board of Education. She taught English and journalism at Sylvan Hills High School, where she was a long-time advisor to the “Bear Facts” student newspaper and later served as yearbook advisor. She maintained friendships with a large number of Sylvan H.S. alumni and faculty. She and the family were deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support exhibited to her by the Sylvan family during her health struggles.
An East Point native and daughter of the late David A. and Nellie McLeroy Fields, Norma was a skilled floral arranger, having worked with her mother in local flower shops. She was a talented pianist and organist who began playing for numerous weddings while in high school. Norma also worked in accounts payable at Rich’s Department Store in Downtown Atlanta for many years. A graduate of College Park High School, she attended the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia, presently Georgia State University, where she was co-editor of The Signal student newspaper. Norma transferred to the University of Georgia, where she pledged Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and graduated with a degree in education in 1955. She was a proud Bulldog.

Norma is survived by her husband of 58 years, Bobby R. McLendon; daughter, Wendi Pruett and her husband Ken of Suwanee; granddaughter, Savannah; and two special nieces, Linda McLendon Dickerson and Marjorie McLendon Stanley, who offered her much love, support and assistance.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on March 22, in the Parrott Funeral Home Chapel with The Reverend Dennis Harris officiating. Interment will follow at College Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Southwest Christian Care, 7225 Lester Road, Union City, Ga. 30291.

The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. prior to the service at Parrott Funeral Home and Crematory, 770-964-4800.
