Hutch and I decided to climb down the steep side of Stone Mountain and explore the carving. We were confident we could do this as all teenagers are immortal as any of them will tell you. We climbed over the fence, sat down on the rock and began to work our way down the mountain. There is a type of grey moss which grows on the mountain that appears dry and withered but is not. When crushed by a persons weight it becomes like butter and is as slick as glass. We both began to slide down the rock face, unable to stop. We spread ourselves on our backs so as to put as much surface friction against the mountain as possible. Still,we continued to ooze down the rock until Hutch, who was to my right, was able to stop by placing his foot on a tiny, one inch ledge in the rock. He reached out his left hand and caught my right hand and pulled me over as I slid by until I could get my foot on the ledge. We followed the ledge, which angled up the mountain, and got back to the top. He saved my life that day. We never tried anything like that again though we did some really crazy stuff later.
