David Mason was well-liked among everyone at CPHS. We were all lucky to have known him. At one reunion I told the story of David and Bob Kennedy finding out if the new Kennedy family car would actually hit 120 mph on I-75 as advertised. Still gives me nightmares being in the back seat. In later years I would see David in a red coat helping bewildered people in the Atlanta airport. David was fortunate to have Alicia in his life.
I took Drivers Ed at the same time as David Mason. Once, the instructor, Mr. X, talked to us about plans for the afternoon and then walked us out to his car -- which turned out to have a flat rear tire. Mr. X told Gary Stockton to get out the jack and change the tire. He continued talking to the rest of us about plans. David glanced over to the other side of the car and said, "Mr. X, you'd better..." but he was cut off my Mr. X who barked, "Leave the boy alone." A few minutes later, David said, "Mr. X, your car is going to...", and this time Mr. X looked to see that Gary had the hook of the jack under the fender at the rear tire and was starting to jack up the fender instead of the rear bumper. David saved the car from damage, but this story would be more epic had he not interfered.
