Strawberry salesman Larry Scarborough dies

William “Larry” Scarborough, a longtime Florida and California strawberry salesman, died Dec. 8, 2014.

Scarborough, 69, began working on the sales desk at Dover, Fla.-based BBI Produce Inc., in 2003.

He retired this spring but quickly volunteered to return to help with seasonal sales this season, said Chris Smith, sales manager.

Scarborough began his produce sales career working on the Atlanta State Farmers Market, in Forest Park, Ga., and also worked in California and Texas produce sales, Smith said.

In Florida, he worked strawberry sales for Dover-based Gulf Coast Produce Inc., and at Wimauma, Fla.-based JayMar Produce Inc.

“He knew about everyone in the strawberry business and he was always an upbeat and incredible guy that was fun to be with,” Smith said. “He never let anything get to him no matter how bad things were or how short strawberries were, it was always going to work out and he loved what he did. He was all excited about doing strawberry sales one more time after retiring.”

Scarborough is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth Scarborough; two sons; two brothers; and three grandchildren.

Memorial services were Dec. 14th in Brandon, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Larry’s name to LifePath Hospice, 3010 W Azeele St., Tampa, Fla., 33609-3139.
