Mary Jo West provided us with the below obituary.

She was outgoing, caring and devoted to her little brother, Robbie.
Gena, who later chose to be called by her first name, Mary, lived in Columbia, South Carolina where she married, raised a family and taught school.
She is survived by her son, Sidney Alston, daughter Ashleigh, and brother Robert Irvin, a CPHS graduate of '73 who resides in New York.

I  am sad to learn of Gena’s death.   I fondly remember her as  a smart and beautiful girl who befriended everyone.  Gena, along with others, made gym class tolerable.  She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and classmates.

Such sad news.  I met Gena in the third grade at Newton Estates and can never forget how her warm smile and equally warm personality could brighten any day.  Rest in peace Gena.  Gordon (Eddie) Hines
