 Joseph Martin Chambers
August 18, 1952 - March 8, 2024
Joseph Martin Chambers, age 71, of Peachtree Corners, Georgia, passed away on Friday, March 08, 2024. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia to the late James Chambers and Jewell Harris Chambers.
Joe is survived by his wife of 50 years, Debra Chambers, his sons Matt Chambers (Wally), Ben Chambers, Cory Chambers; grandchildren, Calvin Chambers, Elliott Chambers and Vanna Chambers; sister, Charlene Bowman (Tony). Denise Forbes (Ron), as well as nieces, nephews, aunts, uncle, and cousins.
Joe grew up on Maple Street in College Park and later moved to the Old National area. He graduated from College Park High School, class of 1970, where he met many lifelong friends. After high school, he and his best friend Joe Hardman went off to South Georgia College in Douglas. He eventually attended Clayton Junior College, and went on to graduate from Georgia State University, class of 1974, with a degree in Criminal Justice.
Joe grew up in Community Baptist Church in College Park. When Joe was 18, he met Debra, who was 15, and it was love at first sight! They were married on August 31, 1974, and were celebrating their golden anniversary this year! Joe and Debra had three sons: Matt, in 1976, Ben, in 1978, and Cory, in 1984. The Chambers family lived in Jonesboro for 17 years, where they were members of Point South First Baptist Church in Riverdale. In 1991 the family moved to Stockbridge. Joe and Debra, and the boys attended Stockbridge First United Methodist Church and were members there for over 30 years.
Joe was a wonderful husband and father, working tirelessly to provide for his family. He was a policeman, a teacher and coach, and then spent 20 years working for the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice. Also, from 1968-1998, Joe was a baseball umpire with the AABC, and spent many spring and summer nights calling balls and strikes all over the south side, including the Pee Wee Reese World Series in Forest Park, Georgia! He also took pride in umpiring for the Georgia High School Association for over 20 years. Joe finished up his career serving as a Disciplinary Hearing Officer for Henry County Schools, where he made some wonderful lifelong friends and touched the lives of many children and their families.
Joe retired in 2012 and he and Debra spent a lot of time traveling to their mountain home in Blairsville, Georgia, and following the yard sale trail all over the southeast! His favorite job by far was being a Granddaddy, and he fit the role quite well! He and Debra happily moved to Peachtree Corners, Georgia in 2021 to be closer to them. Joe was happiest when he spent time with his family, especially his boys and grandchildren! Joe will be missed by so many, but we know hes having a happy homecoming in heaven, and we will see him again.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at Stockbridge First United Methodist Church with Rev. Lavell Sanders and Rev. Jody Ray officiating. Interment will take place at 3:00 pm at College Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 11, 2024, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors.
