David Whitfield Obituary
David Michael Whitfield, age 72, of McDonough, Georgia passed away on November 8, 2024, at Piedmont Fayette Hospital after a short illness. He was born on October 1, 1952, in Atlanta, Georgia, the youngest son of the late Ernest Lee Whitfield Sr. and Mollie Louise Stewart Whitfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, June (Wayne) Davis, Ernest (Gabi) Whitfield Jr., Geraldine (Gerald) Gamble, and Glenn Edward Whitfield.
David leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. A childhood resident of College Park, Georgia, David was a proud graduate of the College Park High School Class of 1971, where his school spirit for the Rams shone brightly.
David dedicated 41 years to Georgia Power Company as a highly skilled and respected electrician, retiring in 2015. He also served his country honorably for six years in the United States Army Reserves, exemplifying his deep sense of patriotism and duty.
David's life was enriched by his many passions and creative pursuits. He was a lifelong car enthusiast, finding joy in attending classic car shows and channeling his artistry into constructing die-cast model cars and designing intricate dioramas of car shops. He loved cheering for the Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Falcons, fishing in tranquil waters, following NASCAR, and exploring the majestic North Georgia Mountains. His loyal dogs and "grand-dogs" brought him immense happiness and companionship.
Married to his beloved Sue for 46 incredible years, David was the heart of his family. A devoted father, he found great joy in spending time with his sons, especially on fishing trips that created treasured memories. Davids love extended beyond his immediate family to his nieces and nephews, who adored him as the best uncle.
Known for his sharp wit and playful humor, David had a unique ability to brighten any room. He delighted in "poking the bear" and kept everyone laughing with his clever jokes and him laughing until he had tears. Beneath his humor was a man of deep loyalty and compassion, always taking the time to check in on the people he cared about and ensuring they felt valued and supported.
David, or "Teet" to those who knew him as a child, was a man of creativity, humor, and immense heart. His legacy of love, craftsmanship, and laughter will continue to inspire and bring joy to all who were fortunate to share in his remarkable life.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Manning Whitfield; his sons, Matthew (Nikki) Whitfield and Brad (Kasey) Whitfield; several very special nieces and nephews, and a host of extended family and friends.
A memorial service to honor David's life will take place on Thursday, November 14, 2024, beginning 2:00 PM at Glen Haven Baptist Church. Pastor Brady Howard will officiate the service.
