Obituary of Thomas W. Light

Thomas “Tom” William Light, born on April 22, 1955 in Atlanta, Georgia, returned to his heavenly home on his 67th birthday, April 22, 2022.

He is survived by his older brother Alfred R. (Mollie) Light; his daughter Olivia Light; along with nephews Joseph (Cody) Light and Gregory (Delia) Light and their four children.

Tom grew up in College Park, Georgia where he was an avid baseball player and fan. He joined ROTC at Georgia Tech and went on to earn his bachelor's degree in computer science followed by masters’ degrees from Florida Institute of Technology in Business Administration and from Naval Postgraduate School in Space System Operations. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in 1977 and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 21 years of service. He went on to work as a civil servant retiring from TRADOC in 2017.

He spent his retirement traveling to places like Hawaii, Alaska, Las Vegas, Puerto Rico, Acadia National Park, and visiting family and long-time friends. He was even able to attend the World Series that named the Atlanta Braves champions in 2021.

He fought cancer like a true soldier. Diagnosed in February of 2020, he initially responded well to chemotherapy. Towards the beginning of 2022, effects seemed to be diminishing and his condition worsened. He entered eternal rest surrounded by loved ones confident that this body and earth was temporary, and that we will all be reunited in Heaven.

A service will be held for Tom on May 8, 2022 at 11:00AM at Nelsen Funeral Home in Williamsburg, Virginia. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a date yet to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
