When Jack Cunningham took over for Jesse Shaddix in 1960, the basketball world was set on its ear! Here was a North Carolina guy who no one knew assuming a team that had won the state championship in 1957! How dare he start ninth-graders! It took a few years but by the time we graduated in 1964,  he had brought this team to a level of respectability  and made us contenders thereafter. He was a good-hearted soul and had to have plenty of patience to put up with our fights, excuses, and insubordination. Being a football coach as well made his job a little easier but it was still a real chore for that man. RIP Jack Cunningham!!

When you got a close, face-to-face blessing out from JC you also  got  a Red Man  mulch to rinse off in the locker room.

Jack Cunningham was the head varsity football coach of the Rams when I made the varsity team in 1970.  He was a tough as nails former marine who we all admired.  I remember we had to stop a game against Headland to look for his dentures on the field.  Coach Cunningham always gave me encoragment and hope.  When I got a scholarship in football to Furman University he kept tabs on me.  In later life he helped people who did not have enough food or that had fell on hard times.  He was a good man who always was there if you needed him.  Thanks coach!

Coach used to send me over to Pop's Grocery during Mechanical Drawing Class to get his Redman. True Outdoorsman and a great example for me during my years at CPHS. Oh how I miss those days. Mike Hudson
