Harris Wheeler

I have retired from 30 years of teaching choral music in Cobb County. The last 4 years were spent as performing arts director at Mount Paran Christian School. For 35 years I was musical director for the Six Flags Corporation. I sang under the direction of Robert Shaw in the Atlanta Symphony Chorus for 5 years. During the 80's, I was musical director/pianist for UPSTAIRS AT GENE AND GABES in Atlanta during which time I wrote the music to "Della's Diner-Blue Plate Special". In 1975, I married Mary Ingram from Newnan, GA. She had been struggling with Leukemia for about 10 years. In February of 2008, as she was heading to the bank, an elderly man ran a read light, T-boning her. Since her immune system had been so compromised, she developed an infection and passed away 3 days later, February 16, 2008.
Our son, Harris, Jr. is a Senior music major at Shorter University in Rome. He is a remarkable young man and I am so extremely proud of him.

SOMETHING NEW:
I wanted to update my profile. On February 11 at Marietta First Baptist Church and on February 13 at Orange Hill Baptist church on Austell, GA, at 7:00 p.m. I am going to be doing concerts for the release of 2 CDs I recorded in October 2013, called "just Harris...". One CD consists of 14 original sacred arrangements called "Music for the Soul". The other CD consists of 18 original secular arrangements called "Music for the Heart". If any of my College Park buddies would like to come, I would love to see you.

My memories while at College Park High School surround anything and everything pertaining to music. Harold Scott was so instrumental in my understanding of playing chord charts and of course, Ruth Barron was my idol. What influential musicians both were. It wasn't until my senior year in high school that it was made apparent to me, by Ms. Barron, that perhaps I should major in music. It honestly never occurred to me. Needless to say, I cannot imagine my life without my involvement in music.
