Carey Jones (1959)

Greetings Emory,

I am pleased that you are able to do this with your father's remains and appropriately identify for posterity.  Not unlike many others, I vividly recall your father and your family.  He served our family during all my years in College Park and was a dutiful and kind physician and friend.  I recall that Mother would say, "call Hendon," whenever one of us needed care.  Your father and sometimes, Dr. King, were always 'there for us'.

Thank you for sharing this information with all of us.  I am certain that you have kindled many warm recollections.  Those who can attend will find it a meaningful experience.

My best...

Carey

Dr. Main, and the Main family, are among my very pleasant memories from College Park. Many of us have thought about turning back the clock and one of the reasons that idea is so appealing to me is to have again the type of physician that Dr. Main was and the type of medicine he practiced. Imagine having one physician who would sit and patiently listen to you and then complete the whole task of diagnosis and treatment. No endless series of invasive tests or referrals to specialists regardless of the type of problem you have.

For many of us, the best medicine was the calm, collected manner that Dr. Main had when he provided the reassurance and treatment that most required. I remember well how my parents and their friends spoke of him, always having faith that they were truly in good hands. Little remains in my memory of Dr. Main from visits to the Main house other than the impression that he had such class. Even at high school age it was easy to see why families had such faith in him.

Emory, I can only imagine how important this day will be for you and I am sorry that I cannot come to Atlanta to share it with you. Your father was an important part of the fabric of the College Park that I and my family loved and, were my parents still living in College Park, they also would treasure the opportunity of paying respects to him and to your family.

Emory,

I remember your family very well.  Your parents, and Pop, were friends of my parents and your wonderful daddy was our doctor for a number of years.  In the 50s, he made housecalls and  visited the (sick) bedside of my brothers and me on several occasions.  What a wonderful tribute you are planning for him.  If I lived in the area, I would love to attend, but I am in Virginia, and my brothers, Jack and Kelton, are in Pensacola, FL.  We will be thinking of you and praying all goes well.

I am passing along a message on behalf of Gloria Needham Howard, via her son, Dale:

I apologize for apparently missing the 2015 multi-year reunion.

I noticed it said it would be around Sept 19, but I have not been diligently reading the e-mails from this site for my mother.

Gloria Howard is still doing okay, though she is getting a bit more forgetful. I challenge her memory though and use music (1940's music) to keep her memory active.

Dale Howard

(I will correct that he thinks she missed the reunion.)

Mrs. Howard has not missed the 2015 reunion (it's still 2014 today), so hope you will put it on your calendar so that she will be able to come next year.  The date is now confirmed for September 26, 2015 instead of September 19, 2015.  Thank you for posting info on your mother....she is a favorite of the CPHS students.

Mrs. Howard is my All Time favorite.  I remember being counsilors aide the last two periods of the day, after I had finished my core.  She use to send me downtown to the library, and give me the keys to hre Pontiac.  What a special feeling that was.

Is she still living in Hapeville?  I would love to stop by and see her.

Jerry Wiley (Wilkes) (1957)

Hi, everyone:  Just dropping in on this Friday night.  It is good to hear how all of you are doing.  Emery Main, I think it's wonderful that you chose to honor your father in that way.  After 53 years of marriage, my husband, Ed Wilkes, passed away 5/9/14.  Did not realize how hard it would be without him.  He was from East Point, but went to high school at Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, TN and college at the University of the South in Sewanee, TN  We all miss him so much, but know that he is in our future.  I look forward to that.  My handsome brother, Paul, has recently had heart surgery, but came back home today.  I inroduced his wife to him.  She was and is my friend.  She graduated from Sylvan High School in 1957 and we worked together at Owens-Illinois Glass Company.  I am doing well.  At 75, I am unusually healthy.  I don't walk as fast as I used to, but I am independent, and I am thankful for that.  Glad to hear that you are doing better, Neal B.  College Park has changed so much, especially the northern part.  Woodward has tripled in size and the homes in that area are selling for $500m-1 million.  Geez!  Couldn't afford to live there now.  My nephew, Lorene and Dick Zupp's son, died recently.  He was 63.  That seems so young to me @75. It was very sad, and reminds me of how mortal we are.  Jerry Wiley Wilkes '57

Sorry I missed the ceremony for Dr. Main.  He was our family doctor all through my childhood in College Park. I really liked him and appreciate all the childhood diseases he brought me through. He was a very fine man and I know he is enjoying his reward now.

Watching the Macy's Christmas  Parade has gotten me thinking of Christmas' past. How many of you would love to once again be in Miss Barron's chorus getting ready to sing "32 Feet and 8 Little Tails",  "Rudolph" (Rah! Rah! Sis Boom Bah!), "Jingle Bells" and "Silent Night"? I can still hear them.

To all friends from CPHS. Hope you and Family had a HAPPY THANKSGIVING.  It was one big family at CPHS no matter what year class you were in. Everyone were friends from the 8-12 grades. Some were friends from grade 1.   Seems like we had 5 to 6 hundred older and younger brothers and sisters. So I give Thanks for you all for being part of life. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving and will  have a Merry CRISTMAS and a Happy, Healthy New Year.       Jack Holt  58

Ward, you are so right.  We were all very lucky to attend CPHS. Say hello to Shirley for me.

CPHS has a lot of Delta Airlines connections.  We are very happy that our younger son, Craig, is now a pilot for Delta.  Merry Christmas!  (Lots of good Christmas season memories from College Park.)  NEAL BARRONTON
